The Thirty Year Old Compliment

I have a terrible recall for past events, but this morning I was remembering one of the best compliments I ever got from a friend.

Her name at the time was Peppie Holran and we were young ladies (maybe even still teens) chatting on the phone as young ladies (maybe teens) are wont to do. I don’t recall what brought it up but she said to me “Something I noticed about talking to you is that you pay attention and really care about what is being said to you. When we’re on the phone, I can’t just make ‘mm-hmm’ noises to the things you say because you’re really listening. And when I’m talking about something, I don’t get ‘mm-hmm’ noises back.” That moment has stuck with me. Thanks, Pep. I hope it’s still true today.
